Liberty Locating finds and marks private underground utilities

Liberty Locating finds and marks the private underground utilities that 811 doesn't cover — keeping your crews safe, your projects on schedule, and your liability low. We serve contractors, developers, municipalities, and industrial facilities across the entire state of Iowa.

WHY PRIVATE UTILITY LOCATING MATTERS IN Iowa

Iowa sits at the agricultural and industrial heart of the Midwest, and its underground infrastructure reflects generations of development that often predates accurate record-keeping. The Des Moines metro is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country — a financial, insurance, and tech hub experiencing sustained commercial and residential construction growth that shows no signs of slowing. Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Sioux City, Iowa City, and Waterloo each carry their own active construction markets and aging underground utility networks. And across Iowa's vast agricultural interior, private utility infrastructure — irrigation systems, grain facility utilities, fuel distribution networks, drainage tile systems, and more — extends across millions of acres of privately held land with little to no documentation.

That creates layered risk for anyone planning to dig, drill, or trench anywhere in Iowa. 811 — Iowa One Call — coordinates the marking of publicly-owned utility lines, the mains running in streets and public rights-of-way. But the moment those lines cross onto private property, Iowa One Call coverage ends entirely. Every utility running across a commercial property, industrial facility, farm, or private parcel is your responsibility to locate before you break ground.

Iowa's agricultural economy adds a dimension of subsurface risk that doesn't exist in more urbanized states. Drainage tile systems — networks of perforated plastic pipe buried across farm fields to manage water — are among the most commonly struck and most expensive private utilities in Iowa. They don't appear on any 811 response. Neither do private irrigation mains, on-site grain facility utilities, farm fuel systems, or the countless other buried features that get discovered mid-project at great cost.

A utility strike in Iowa isn't just a repair bill. It's a project shutdown, an OSHA investigation, potential crew injury, and serious legal liability. And on agricultural land, a struck drainage tile system can mean flooded fields, crop damage, and a repair bill that runs well into five figures. Liberty Locating eliminates that risk before your crew ever breaks ground. We use electromagnetic (EM) locating and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to map private utilities anywhere in Iowa — from the urban job sites of Des Moines to the rural expanses of western Iowa.

Our Services

General Contractors & Excavators

We coordinate directly with your crew, work around your dig schedule, and show up when we say we will. We understand how Iowa job sites operate — from complex commercial excavations in the Des Moines metro to open rural site work across the Iowa countryside — and we bring the communication and professionalism that keeps your project moving.

Civil & Geotechnical Engineers

Engineering firms throughout Iowa rely on accurate subsurface utility data to design safe, code-compliant projects. We provide the field data and documentation your team needs — site sketches, utility depth estimates, and digital mapping files that integrate directly into your engineering workflow and support your deliverables.

Commercial Property Developers

Des Moines continues to be one of the fastest-growing commercial real estate markets in the Midwest. Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and the Quad Cities are seeing sustained development activity. Private utility conflicts are among the most common and most expensive surprises in commercial development. We eliminate that variable before it becomes a change order.

Environmental Consultants

Phase II environmental investigations, brownfield redevelopment projects, and LUST assessments throughout Iowa regularly require subsurface utility investigation. We work alongside environmental consultants and provide the documentation needed to support your regulatory reporting requirements.

Industrial Facilities & Manufacturing Plants

Iowa is home to significant food processing, manufacturing, bio-fuel production, and distribution infrastructure. Active facilities with decades of operational history often have private utility networks that no longer match any drawing on file. We map what's actually there — not just what aging records claim.

Telecommunications & Utility Contractors

When you're installing new underground infrastructure across Iowa — from urban conduit runs in Des Moines to rural fiber buildouts across western Iowa — knowing what's already in the ground is not optional. We make sure your crews have accurate subsurface information before installation begins.

Why Iowa Contractors Choose Liberty Locating

Your site mapping data is hosted by US based software companies — not on overseas servers. That matters for sensitive commercial and industrial sites.

We bring both EM locating and GPR to every engagement, using the right technology for the conditions. Not every company does — and that difference shows up in accuracy.

We're not a national dispatch center. Liberty Locating is a Kansas City-based, family-owned company. When you call, you talk to real people who live and work in this region — not a call center routing your job to a mystery technician.

We understand that construction timelines don't wait. We work to accommodate your schedule — and can often get on site within a few days of your request across Iowa.

We coordinate our work around your 811 ticket so there's no confusion about what's been marked and what hasn't. You get a complete picture of what's underground — public and private.

FAQs

  • Yes. Private utility locating is not a replacement for 811. You’re still required to call 811 before digging so the public utilities can mark the lines they own. We come in to locate the private lines that 811 doesn’t cover.

  • We recommend reaching out as soon as you know your dig date. Depending on workload and site location, we can often accommodate projects within a few days.

  • Site address, a description of your planned work, the area to be scanned, and any existing drawings or as-builts you have. The more information you share, the more efficient and accurate we can be.
